Emergency Procedures - Online Meetings / Courses

Emergencies can occur at any time including during online classes and meetings. Cal Poly Humboldt wants you to be prepared in the event you observe the host or a participate is need of assistance or are notified of such.

BE READY

  • KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. As an instructor / meeting leader, be prepared by gathering or having a way to access basic contact information for attendees including their address, phone number, and emergency contact.
  • RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS. Know the signs that indicate that someone may be in distress or in danger. These will depend on the emergency being experienced but could include audible warnings, behavioral changes, verbal complaints, or changes to the physical environment.
  • KNOW PROCEDURES. Review emergency procedures on the Emergency Management website. Be familiar with the procedures for each type of hazard. This will be valuable information to pass along to participants should they encounter any of the identified hazards during the meeting or course. See here for additional information on what to do in the event of an online emergency.

TAKE ACTION

  • SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. Keep an eye on your surroundings and the attendees (when video/audio is available). ACT (Assist / Call for Help / Tell Someone) if you notice signs that a participant is in danger or if they request (emergency) assistance.
  • EMS SUPPORT. If emergency assistance services (EMS) is needed, encourage the participant (or someone in their household) to contact their local emergency service(s), if able to. This will assist in getting responders to the participant in a timely manner. If attendee is unresponsive and alone, contact EMS, provide as much information as you have about the attendee and stay on the line until EMS arrives at the scene.
  • FOLLOW PROCEDURES. Follow procedures as outlined above and ask other attendees / administrator for additional support to aid in monitoring the situation or collecting additional information as needed.

POST EVENT PROCEDURES

  • REPORT THE INCIDENT. Complete the Incident Report Form located here so Risk Management & Safety Services can follow up with the attendee.
  • COPING WITH TRAUMA. Consider seeking professional help to cope with the long-term effects of trauma from witnessing or being involved in the event. Students can find resources through the Counseling and Psychology Services (CAPS) here and employees can find them through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) here.
